Sarah McGill the Chief Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal Officer at Cardiff County Council has now become the Chair of AWCHOP for the year 2009/2010.

 

Sarah joined Cardiff Council in 1987 as a Deputy Area Housing Manager following a year working as Tenant Liaison Officer in Merthyr Tydfil on the Galon uchaf Priority Estate Project where her duties including collecting the rent (usually in the rain as she recalls).  Sarah was appointed as Chief Officer for Housing, Advice & Benefits in Cardiff in 2003 and in 2007 was appointed Chief Officer for Housing & Neighbourhood Renewal (HANR) which is a large department with more than 1200 staff and an annual capital budget of more than £30m.

 

HANR delivers a full range of housing related services covering the management of the Council's housing stock, Benefit & Finance services, Private Sector Housing, Communities First, Disabled Facilities Services, Community Safety and Homelessness.

 

Sarah has been instrumental in the development of the Council and Local Service Board's successful initiative on Neighbourhood Management and is Senior Responsible Officer for the Transforming Neighbourhood Programme Board.  She has demonstrated her commitment to joined up partnership working through this and many other tasks.  Sarah is also a WLGA Housing Advisor.

 

Sarah's future aspirations are linked very much to the development of the Local Service Board work.  The key elements she would like to concentrate on are cross partnership problem solving and joined up service delivery based on meeting citizen's needs.

 

Sarah's very limited relaxation time is with a book by the beach in Ibiza albeit with details of the latest budget cuts as additional reading.  Sarah is looking forward to her year in office at a very demanding time for housing with the Essex Review and the new National Housing Strategy about to come to fruition amidst a servere downturn in the national economic climate.  Sarah's ambition for AWCHOP is to ensure that they rise to the challenge and positively contribute to the Housing Improvement Agenda.
